Pudukkottai was created as a separate district on January 14, 1974 and consisted of several additions from the earlier Pudukkottai and Thanjavur districts of Tiruchirappalli district. At present, the district has three revenue divisions - Pudukkottai, Aranthangi and Irupur - and 12 taluks - Kulathur, Irupur, Arangudi, Pudukkottai, Gandharvakottai, Thirumayam, Arantangi, Avdairakoil, Manamerkudi, Ponnamaravati, Kalambakudi and Viralimalai. It consists of There are 763 revenue villages. The area of the district is 4663 square kilometers. The population of this district is 16,18,345 (as per 2011 census). The district is highly dependent on the monsoon for water supply.

The story of Pudukkottai is a microcosm of South Indian history. Pudukkottai and its surroundings are home to many of the earliest human settlements and some of the stone finds known from the south. The Pandyas, Cholas, Pallavas, Haisalas, Vijaynagaras and Madurai Nayaks ruled this part of the country, promoting public institutions, trade and industry, and adorning it with temples and valuable monuments. .
The Sangam Tamil literature mentions several place names of this district. Oriyamangalam (Tirumayam taluk) is called Oraiyur in Purananur. This is the birthplace of the poet Oraiyur Kiranmakan Perumuchattan and his Pandian Olayur Tanta Buddha. Agananuru also mentions Oraiyuru. Calcaculici is where a hoard of over 500 Roman gold and silver coins was discovered, the largest ever recorded from a single hoard, and is worth mentioning in the context of the area's early history . The site is located in Arangudi taluk, just north of Arantangi, adjacent to the ancient ports of Mimisar and Saliyur in the same region and further south in Tondi. The site is the site of an important Indo-Roman trading center, which was then connected to an inland trade route between western and eastern ports.
